Why does a clear case turn yellow and what can you do?

Yellowing is usually not a layer of dirt that can be washed away completely. Light, heat, skin oils and ageing gradually change the clear material itself.

In this guide
  1. The main causes
  2. What cleaning can do
  3. How to slow yellowing
  4. When replacement makes sense

The main causes

UV light and heat accelerate oxidation. Skin oils, cosmetics and dirt can also attach to or migrate into the surface.

What cleaning can do

Mild soap removes surface dirt and oil. The case looks fresher, but chemical discolouration cannot be fully reversed.

How to slow yellowing

Clean regularly, avoid leaving the case in strong sunlight or a hot car, and keep it away from strongly coloured liquids.

When replacement makes sense

Replace the case if it becomes hard, brittle or deformed, or when its edges and buttons no longer fit properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is yellowing a quality defect?

Not always. Many clear plastics change colour over time; the material determines how quickly.

Does bleach help?

It is not recommended. It can damage the material and coating and is unsuitable for frequent hand contact.
