MagSafe vs Qi: what is the difference?
Understand magnetic alignment and wireless charging so you can choose the right charger and case.
MagSafe and Qi are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Qi describes wireless charging; MagSafe adds magnetic alignment and an Apple accessory ecosystem on compatible iPhones.
Qi in brief
Qi transfers power wirelessly through coils. The phone must sit correctly on the charger. Poor positioning can slow or interrupt charging.
What MagSafe adds
A magnetic ring centres a compatible charger or accessory. Chargers stay aligned, while mounts, wallets and stands snap into place.
A magnetic case on older iPhones
A case with a ring can add magnetic attachment to a Qi iPhone without built-in MagSafe. It does not change the phone’s charging hardware or maximum speed.
Choosing the right combination
Check your iPhone model, charger output and power adapter. Keep metal cards away from the charger and watch for excessive heat.
